Golf pro MACK JESSUP is a great golfer, whose game has gone bad. So bad that he self-destructs and plays the worst round in PGA history (his game having gone completely south after his beloved mother dies.) And when Mack accidentally hits the Commissioner's wife in the eye with a golf ball, he's kicked off the tour. Upon returning home to North Carolina, Mack tries to regain his touch for the game he loves and coincidently reunites with his high school sweetheart, ROBIN LANTIS. Robin supervises a group of six foster children --- too old for adoption, too wild to tame, but too young to give up on ---- and convinces Mack into giving them golf lessons. In the process of teaching his "mulligans" unconventional techniques, Mack comes to understand the emotional hardships each child endures and during the experience, he reconnects with Robin. The children grow to trust Mack, but Robin still cannot. Robin's attached herself to a local developer, BARLOW CARRINGTON, who has plans to convert Mountain Pines to a retirement community. Mack's love for the golf course on which he learned the game and his growing attraction to Robin triggers a bet that pits his Mulligans against Barlow's country club team, the winner claiming title to the course and the rights to Robin's affections.
